Fitness on the Plaza: Getting Boston Moving for Health

Wondering how to stay active this summer once your kids are out of school? Mayor Menino’s Boston Moves for Health initiative has got you covered. Last week, the Mayor announced that the Boston Public Health Commission is launching FREE exercise classes at City Hall Plaza on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays throughout June, July, and August to get you and your family moving for health!

There’s a little something for everyone. If you’re looking to work up a sweat, try a boot camp class with fast-paced exercises that are sure to get your heart pumping. (You can bring your kids along to the family-friendly Beantown Bootcamp class offered Fridays from 2:30-3:30pm!) Yoga classes will help you unwind, decrease stress, and increase flexibility.

Check out the schedule of classes below and pencil your favorites into your family’s calendar to make physical activity part of your family’s summer schedule:

  • Health Yoga Life: Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:30am, from June 6 to July 25. (If the outdoor class is rained out, it will be held at Health Yoga Life’s nearby studio at 12 Temple Street.)
  • South Boston Yoga and The Sports Club/LA: Yoga classes every Thursday morning from 7:00-8:00am, from July 12 to August 30.
  • Beantown Bootcamp: Boot camp sessions every Friday morning from 6:30-7:30am (rain or shine), from July 6th to August 31. A more family-friendly afternoon session will take place Fridays from 2:30-3:30pm. Boot camp classes will happen rain or shine.

Head over to the Boston Moves for Health website to create a free account and start tracking your activity. There’s no need to register for classes ahead of time but be sure to wear appropriate exercise clothes such as sneakers and breathable fabrics, and don’t forget to bring water to keep hydrated!
