Healthy Family Fun spent some time getting to know Besonia and her son, Joshua, at their lovely home one warm afternoon in May. They shared some of the ways that they have fun and stay healthy – while also staying in their budget. We talked with Besonia while Joshua demonstrated his new Wii Fit – a present for his 7th birthday (see photos of Joshua “in action” below).
One way that Besonia saves money and stays healthy is by keeping her kitchen stocked and cooking healthy meals at home. Besonia learned some great grocery shopping and cooking tips through Martha Eliot Health Center’s “I’m in Charge” (INC) program. Besonia participated in a grocery shopping “tour,” where she learned tips for making healthy choices at the store, and attended a series of INC “healthy cooking” classes. For extra discounts, she watches the newspaper for coupons and sales at local grocery stores. One store where Besonia and her son grocery shop together is Stop & Shop in Jamaica Plain, which is where we first met them – check out some photos from the photo shoot below.
Being healthy means eating healthy and staying active for Besonia and Joshua. When meals include rice and beans, she serves more beans than rice to ensure that Joshua gets enough protein. One of Joshua’s favorite home-cooked meals is a “sopa” (soup) of cabbage, potatoes and noodles. Mom Besonia limits Joshua’s sweets, and stores these items on the highest kitchen shelves to discourage un-monitored snacking.
To stay active, Besonia walks everywhere she can with Joshua, which is also an opportunity for them to spend some time out of the house together. They plan to attend NStar’s Walk for Children’s Hospital Boston on June 12th. Joshua enjoys playing soccer with friends in local parks several afternoons a week. He is looking forward to taking field trips with his school program at the Blackstone this summer, and also plans to spend some time cooling off in the water fountain at the Christian Science Center (and hopes to convince his mom to take a trip to a water park)!
A big thank you to Besonia and Joshua for hosting Healthy Family Fun in their home. Watch for MBTA posters and billboards featuring them in June!
