It was 163 years ago this week that the first YMCA was founded in the US. The whole association of centers for fitness and learning started right here in Boston on its birthday way back in 1851. Now YMCA USA is made up of more than 2,700 branches. The YMCA’s oldest branch and its flagship location happens to be right around the corner on Huntington Ave near Northeastern University and Mission Hill in Boston. This hundred-year-old branch just got a facelift with a $40 million upgrade of the building and its equipment. Now is the time to visit the Huntington YMCA and take advantage of its brand new features as a member or guest:
- 10,000 square foot cardio and strength training center
- Indoor swimming pool
- Hardwood court for basketball and two state-of-the-art handball courts
- Three studios for yoga, Zumba, and more
January 4th marks the beginning of the winter session for all the YMCA’s swim lessons, youth sports clinics, and specialty fitness classes like TRX for adults. Check out the full winter session schedule here and head down to the Huntington YMCA to sign up. There are 19 YMCA centers in the Boston branch alone. So if you want to mix it up from the Huntington location, find the YMCA nearest you here.
