Between barbeques, ice cream stands, and vacation getaways, keeping up a healthy diet in the summer can be a challenge. Stay on track by following these simple, healthy eating suggestions.
Choose Lean Meats
Grilling is a great way to enjoy the nice weather and add some extra flavor to your food! Unfortunately, several BBQ staples are high in sugar, salt, and damaging fats. While it’s okay to enjoy these foods in moderation, consider picking up some of these leaner proteins:
- Fish, especially salmon, tuna, and mahi mahi
- Ground turkey burgers (instead of mayo and ketchup, top with delicious guacamole or feta cheese!)
Healthier Cold Treats
With scorching temperatures, it is all the more tempting to stop for a cold treat, but there are some great, healthy alternatives to ice cream!
Dehydration in the summer months is a major concern. To stay hydrated, buy a reusable water bottle and keep it with you all the time as a reminder to take sips regularly. You can also add some fruit slices for an extra punch of vitamin c!
Take advantage of fresh produce
During the summer, fruits and veggies grow in abundance and are less expensive, so be on the lookout for the following in season items:
- Veggies: onion, corn, portabella mushrooms, eggplant, zucchini, asparagus, and bell peppers are all great options to throw on the grill.
- Fruit: instead of pasta or potato salad, make a fruit salad out of berries, watermelon, pineapple, and cantaloupe. Grilled peaches also make an awesome dessert! Try topping with plain Greek yogurt for extra protein and calcium.
