With so many ice cream trucks, summer barbeques, and vacations, it’s easy to stop thinking about eating healthy in summer. But staying healthy this summer doesn’t mean giving up your favorite summer treats! Try these tips below for keeping yourself and your family healthy over the summer while still enjoying all the best parts of summer.
Barbeque
Barbeques don’t have to be unhealthy. And remember, playing games in the yard afterwards is a great way to make the afternoon even more fun!
- Try out these healthier, summer burgers
- Make a fruit salad, instead of a pasta salad
- Grill fish or chicken, or try some vegetable kabobs instead of burgers or steaks
Stay hydrated
Drinking water is important all year round, but even more so in summer when we sweat so much of it out. When you’re thirsty and it’s hot, you can keep cool with a reusable water bottle filled with ice and cold water, while avoiding sugary drinks. Fill your water bottle with:
- Tap water
- A Cranberry Spritzer
- Water flavored with fresh fruit slices
Or you can:
- Experiment with smoothies
- Pack some watermelon slices for a snack
Cool snacks
There are some great, healthy alternatives to ice cream in the summer!
And remember, summer is also one of the best times of the year to find affordable, fresh foods, especially at the farmers’ markets popping up all over the city! Check out the markets in your neighborhood this weekend.
