As the weather warms up, each weekend in the Boston area there seems to be a road race. While you may grumble about the traffic they cause or the crowds in the streets, these local races can also be a fun opportunity for you to be active with your family!
Running and jogging are often seen as “extreme” physical activities. However, the benefits of jogging are known to help:
- Achieve and maintain a healthy weight
- Reduce risk for chronic diseases like heart disease
- Strengthen bones and muscles
- Improve mental health and mood
And, if the health benefits of jogging do not convince you, programs such as “Couch to 5K” make it easy by providing you with the tools and motivation to reach your jogging goals.
Over the course of 9-12 weeks, you and your family can slowly build up to jogging the distance of a 5K race, or 3.1 miles. Starting at your own pace and for short periods of time, you and your family can go running together.
First, check with your health care provider to make sure that running is a safe and appropriate physical activity for you and each family member.
Then, set your first 5k goal! A list of upcoming races can be found through the Running in the USA calendar.
