March is National Nutrition Month®, a month designed to highlight the importance of making informed, healthy food choices. This year’s theme, “Savor the Flavor of Eating Right,” is about enjoying food—and who doesn’t want to do that?
Taste is often the number one factor influencing our food decisions—whether sweet, salty, spicy, or tangy, it’s these flavors that usually stick in our memories and influence what we decide to eat. Unfortunately, when many people think about eating healthy and health foods in general, most assume they have to sacrifice taste. The purpose of National Nutrition Month® this year is to correct that myth! You can eat food that is both tasty AND healthy if you know where to look and what to cook. In fact, the idea is that we should take time to enjoy the flavors and experiences of the food we eat, and also aim to eat food that is both flavorful AND nutritious.
Finding tasty and healthy food—that’s also within your budget—can be a balancing act. Luckily, there are many resources available online to help you out. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic’s “Eat Right” movement has activity and educational handouts specifically for kids and families that you can print and post around your house. Some of our favorites are below:
- Eating Right on a Budget: learn how to plan your shopping list to get the most nutrition for your food budget. Also available in Spanish.
- Shop Smart—Get the Facts on Food Labels: get an overview of food labels to find which foods are sources of important nutrients for your health
- Eating Right with MyPlate: review the national recommendations and guidelines for eating a healthy and balanced meal. Click here to see MyPlate in other languages, like Spanish, French, Korean, and Arabic.
In honor of National Nutrition Month®, we’ll be posting some recipes that you and your family will be sure to enjoy. Make sure to keep an eye out! But for now, Happy National Nutrition Month® and happy, healthy, and tasty eating!
