Fill this Thanksgiving with Plenty of Healthy, Family, Fun!

Thanksgiving provides a wonderful opportunity to spend time with loved ones and to enjoy eating together as a family. But for many, Thanksgiving also means a day of munching on heavy foods like mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and piles of turkey with gravy. Eating too many of these rich foods may leave you feeling sluggish or even make you sick!

To prevent falling into a post-turkey funk, follow our tips for a Healthy Family Fun-approved holiday:

  • Don’t start the day hungry. Eat a light meal early in the day (such as our Tomato Basil Soup) to prevent overeating when the mail course arrives
  • Stay hydrated. Sometimes our bodies confuse hunger with thirst, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep cravings in check
  • Make substitutions. Swap low-fat diary products for full-fat in your cooking, or cut them out altogether such as substituting traditional mashed potatoes or stuffing for Healthy Family Fun’s Roasted Cauliflower and Leeks
  • Fill up on veggies. Skip the mac-and-cheese and instead serve a bowl of flavorful roasted vegetables as a nutrient-packed side dish that won’t slow you down
  • Don’t deprive yourself. You don’t have to skimp on dessert to keep your Thanksgiving meal under control; try a small bowl of our Better-for-You Bread Pudding or a baked apple to satisfy your sweet tooth

Suggest that your family take breaks between courses to work up a sweat playing a game of flag football, shooting hoops at the park, or taking a brisk walk around the block. Slowing down your meal will help your brain register whether or not you’re still hungry before you have the chance to go for seconds.

This Thanksgiving enjoy your holiday! But also take time to appreciate what you have (including your health!).
